🆕 Can create only permission

We’re excited to keep making permissions in Tape more flexible and better aligned with real use cases.

With Can create only, there’s now a new permission for cases where people can create records, but cannot access existing ones.

You can also decide what access creators should have after they create a record. This setting applies to all new records created with the permission you choose, and defines what the creator is allowed to do with the record afterwards:

  • Full access
  • Can share
  • Can edit
  • Can comment
  • Can view
  • No access

For example:

  • You might have a request database where people previously submitted new records through a form, just to avoid giving them access to the full database. With Can create only , they can now create records directly and keep Can view or Can comment access after creation, so they can follow the status or add more details later.
  • You might have a vacation request database where workspace members can create new requests and keep Can comment access after creation, so they can add details or answer follow-up questions.
  • You might have an intake database where teammates can create new leads, issues, or requests and have No access after creation, so only managers can review the submitted records.
  • You might have an internal feedback database where people can add feedback and keep Can view access after creation, so they can still see what they submitted.

To give someone Can create only permission:

  1. Open a database.
  2. Click Share at the top of the database.
  3. Open the access level dropdown for Admins, Members, or Everyone at your organization, or invite a person and open their access level dropdown.
  4. Select Can create only.
  5. Under Access after creation, choose what access they should have to the records they create.

Can create only works for database apps and doesn’t change access to existing records. It only applies to new records created after the permission is assigned.

This makes it easier to let people submit new records while keeping the rest of the database protected.

This is cool.

A good use-case for this is support tickets. Users can create tickets and see the progress/comments etc.
