[DONE] User Cannot Delete Own Account

There doesn’t seem to be any way for a Tape user to delete their own user account within a particular organization. I know that technically a user can be removed from all workspaces and shared items/apps, but it seems like a GDPR violation to not allow users to delete their own accounts if they are not needed anymore.

Hi @andrew.cranston,

Thank you very much for your concern and suggestion for improvement. At Tape, data security, privacy, and GDPR compliance are extremely important to us, and we pay close attention to ensuring our platform is aligned with best practices in these areas.

Unlike Podio, we’ve adopted an organization-centric approach, similar to enterprise-grade platforms like Salesforce or Office 365. In our setup, user accounts are owned by the organization. This is a deliberate and essential design choice to ensure consistent administrative control and full data governance.

As a result, a user can never delete their own account. Instead, once they leave the organization or their account is deactivated, they may request the deletion of any personal data in accordance with GDPR. However, the account itself remains under organizational control and cannot be deleted by the user.

Because such requests are extremely rare, we’ve not yet implemented a dedicated feature allowing org admins or owners to carry this out independently. For now, we handle these requests manually.

In contrast, Podio took a user-centric approach where users owned their accounts and could be members of multiple organizations. That naturally makes it more common and feasible for users to delete their own accounts. In platforms like Salesforce or Office 365, this is, to my knowledge, also not possible. This is not only due to GDPR but also because of jurisdiction-specific data retention requirements that could otherwise be violated.

Best regards,
Leo
