🆕 Link to a block

Every block in Tape now has its own URL. :tada:
From a single field or chart to an entire section, you can copy a link and take someone straight to it.

Create a shortcut to a chart on a dashboard, guide your team to the right section of a record, or build a table of contents so everyone can find what they need.

:compass: Two ways to link to a block

  • Link to block
Opens a specific record and jumps to that exact block in that record. Even in an app with 100 records, the link always takes your teammate to the same block in the same record.
  • Link to block · Within current record
Jumps to the same block in the record you’re viewing. Perfect for a table of contents with links like “Overview,” “Tasks,” and “Documents” that works in every record.

:books: Copy a block link

  1. Open your app and click ••• in the top-right corner
  2. Select Customize record layout for a database, Unlock dashboard for a dashboard, or Unlock form for a form
  3. Hover over a block and click the ⋮⋮ handle on the left
  4. Select Copy link to block
  5. Paste the link where you need it

:link: Add links where they fit

  • Text block
Write your text, select it, and click Add link. Paste the block URL and choose the link type.
  • Link block
Type /link and select Link under Basic blocks. Paste the block URL and choose the link type.
  • Email, messages, and documents
Share the URL to take someone straight to a specific block.

:sparkles: More than anchor links built with calculation fields

If you’ve built navigation with calculation fields, block links make it easier to set up and clearer to follow:

  • Highlight the destination
Clicking a block link animates the jump and highlights the target in blue, so your teammate can see what you’re pointing to.
  • Guide people to a whole section
Drag fields, images, or charts into a group or box block, then select Copy link to block on that block. The link takes people to that section and highlights it as a whole.
  • Free up calculation capacity
A link built with a calculation field is recalculated when a field used in its formula changes. For example, using “Last edited” can trigger a recalculation after every record edit, even though the link stays the same. Block links skip this work, leaving more capacity for your other calculations.

Your existing calculation links keep working. We recommend using block links for new navigation and updating your existing links to get these benefits. This leaves more calculation capacity available for other work in your organization.

:blue_heart: Built with your ideas

Thanks to everyone who shared ideas for better navigation, including these suggestions for navigation within records and quick links. Your ideas helped make block links possible.

Happy building.

actual quote from a call today: “Is there any way that we could hot link that summary up at the top? Right now, it’s just pulling data…if the page summary field was linkable so she could click on that and it would nav her right away to the correct tab…”

I laughed and told them YES, because the Tape team is awesome, they released a new feature 5 hrs ago that makes this possible!

thank you guys for always listening to user feedback and rapidly releasing updates that make a difference in the daily workflow of actual users. It is appreciated way beyond just the nerdy developer users like me.
