๐Ÿ†• Unique ID - now in the new record experience and forms

What number should this ticket get? How do you generate the next one in sequence? And how do you make sure every ID stays unique?

These are the details that should just be there, not something you need to build with a workflow or a calculation.

The unique ID field generates a unique ID for each record. Itโ€™s ideal for ticket, contract, or order numbers.

Weโ€™re happy to release the new unique ID field today across the new record experience, Tape Forms, and the mobile app when creating and editing records.

The ID is automatically managed by Tape, stays unique, canโ€™t be edited, and remains the same for the lifetime of the record.

:books: How to get started

  1. Switch to the new record experience in one of your database apps
  • Click the โ€ขโ€ขโ€ข button in the top right
  • Select New Record Beta
  • Click Set as default for you (all details โž”)
  1. Open any record in a database app
  2. Unlock the record via the โ€ขโ€ขโ€ข menu in the top right
  3. Click the + icon in the left margin whenever you hover over a new line
  4. Select Unique ID from the field type list (Help Center โž”)

To configure the field:
Open the โ‹ฎโ‹ฎ menu in the left margin when you hover over a unique ID field.

:sparkles: The unique ID field comes with:

  • Size
Choose the text size of the unique ID, from small to extra extra large.
  • Wrap text
Let long IDs wrap onto multiple lines instead of being cut off.
  • Minimum length
Choose the minimum length. 1 keeps numbers plain, while 0001 pads them to four digits. You can use up to twelve digits.
  • Prefix
Set a unit before the number, like ORD- or INV- . By default, no prefix is added.
  • Suffix
Set a unit after the number, like /2026 or -EU . By default, no suffix is added.
  • Access (Premium)
Choose who can view the field.
  • Style settings
Adjust the label display and size, placeholder, tooltip, field icon, and more.
  • Top and bottom descriptions
Add helper text above or below the field, such as context or a short note.
  • Rules (Premium)
Show or hide the field based on other field values.
  • Rearranging fields
Use the โ‹ฎโ‹ฎ handle next to the field label to drag and drop fields. Reorder them, move them around the record, or place them into different columns.
  • Multiple unique ID fields
Add the field several times in the same record, each with its own prefix, suffix, and display settings.

Get started faster by duplicating the :point_right: template workspace and adapting it to your setup.
Happy building.
