New record experience: now in public beta 🎉

For years, you’ve built powerful CRMs, sales pipelines, project management systems, and more.
But one pain point keeps showing up across many platforms:

Records can become long. Very long.
Endless fields mean more scrolling, and key information gets harder to find.
That’s exactly what the new record experience solves.

Thanks to our partners’ feedback, it’s now open in beta.
Start using it today without needing to rebuild later. Everything stays compatible. You get upgrades as we ship them. And if you use it now, your feedback will have the biggest impact on Tape’s feature roadmap.

The best part:
âś“ No migration needed
âś“ Switch anytime (one click)
âś“ Everything you build today will keep working
âś“ Both versions stay in sync with the same data
âś“ Everything is optional. Your current record stays available

So you can use the new record experience today in your day-to-day work, with real data.

:sparkles: What’s new?

The new record experience introduces a new way to build software for your unique processes.
Records no longer have to be endless vertical field lists.
They can now become structured record pages.
Complex setups feel clearer and easier to work with, without losing flexibility.

For builders

Tape lets you build without a traditional form builder.
· Only editors can unlock and make changes
· Changes show instantly (no saving, no preview)
· Building complex apps becomes easier, feels like working in a doc

For users

It’s all about better, faster, and more enjoyable work:
· Structured pages instead of long field lists
· Less scrolling, more clarity, info is easier to find
· Easy to get started for new teammates and occasional users

A few examples of what becomes possible:
· Columns
· Field label settings (none, top, left, right, icon-only)
· Conditional logic (show/hide fields using rules)
· Field access settings
· Record activity sidebar (on/off)
· Full-page record view
· And much more

:repeat: Switching is simple

We put a lot of engineering effort into making the switch smooth.

Switching feels like a toggle:
· Current record and new record experience stay in sync
· Field updates and values appear right away in both
· Switch back anytime
· Design layouts while everything keeps running as usual

This means you can use it in real work, with real data, without blocking anyone.

To start:

  1. Reload Tape to get the update
  2. Open any database app
  3. Click the ••• button in the top right
  4. Select New Record Beta

You’ll see three options:

  • Off → shows the current record
  • Set as default for you → turns on the new record experience for you
  • Set as default for all → turns on the new record experience for everyone in the app

:brick: A new superpower (and beta notes)

Based on partner feedback and our own usage, one thing became clear:
Tape already supports 100+ design combinations. Every Tape builder can become a designer now.

We recommend starting with a new app or a copied template workspace first.
There’s a lot to try, and it helps to get familiar with the new options before rolling it out to a full team.

Beta notes:

  • The beta is safe to test, but we recommend not enabling it for everyone in apps with real data until the field types you need are supported.
  • We’re still moving fast in development, so things may change quickly
  • Layouts may shift without notice
  • Bugs can happen and might take time to fix
  • Some design elements or menu items may change or be removed
  • If the field type used as the title in the current record is not yet supported for new records, “Untitled” will be displayed.

:magic_wand: What’s ready today, what’s next

The foundation is in place, and many features around the new record experience are already available.

Field types supported right now:
· Single line text
· Multi line text
· Single select
· Multi select
· Status
· Files
· Images

Relations are the next big milestone, and they’re currently in development. Please share requests here.
After that, we’ll expand the remaining field types.
Every new field type will work across the new record experience, forms, and the mobile app.

And there’s a lot more coming.

:rocket: Feedback?

To keep everything organized, please share feedback in the community:

 If you’re new to Tape

What is a record?
A record is a single item inside a database app.
Learn more: Tape hierarchy structure

What is a record made of?
A record contains multiple fields, like text, date, calculation, or relation fields.
You can customize field types and settings depending on what you’re building.

Current record vs. new record experience?
Current record means the record layout Tape users work with today.
The new record experience is a new way to structure and design records. Both use the same data, so nothing changes about your field values.

What this means for you?
The new record experience is in beta, so a few field types are still on the way. In the meantime, you can use Tape fully with all field types in the current record and switch back anytime if needed.

Why we’re doing it this way
We’re building this together with the community, in public.
That means you can already try the new record experience today, and we’ll keep shipping improvements step by step. We highly recommend giving it a quick try.

Enjoy beautiful records :bug: → :butterfly:
