๐Ÿ†• Mobile app update: Create & edit records via Tape forms

Heads up: This is a hack, not even close to the mobile experience we will offer with Tape in the long term. But we tested it ourselves and found it works better than expected, so weโ€™ve decided to make it available to everyone!

Thanks to this post by @andrew.cranston, we had an idea:
What if we could use our new forms tech to ship mobile record creation + editing. Now, instead of waiting? So we did.

How it works

When you create or edit a record on your smartphone, we now use the new Forms technology. The only thing you might notice is that it takes a bit longer to load, as we need to generate and open a Form in the background.

Since this is powered by Forms, only the field types already supported in Forms are currently available. Instead of waiting until all field types are ready, weโ€™re unlocking them one by one.

Field types available today:

  • Single Text
  • Multi Text
  • Status
  • Single Select
  • Multi Select
    Coming next: File Field

Stay up to date with supported field types in this post.

To edit an existing record:

  • Open any record on mobile
  • Tap the pencil icon in the top right to edit.
  • Change or add content
  • No save needed, auto-save handles changes

To create a new record:

  • Search for an existing record in the app where you want to create a new record. For example, via search or from a notification
  • Open that record
  • Tap the plus icon in the top-right corner to create a new record
  • A blank record will open
  • Add your content and save

This workaround will stay in place until our full mobile app update arrives, which will include proper support for browsing apps, creating records from scratch, and a much faster, more polished experience overall. This hack is for anyone who needs to create or edit records right now.

Just update your mobile app or download it here: Get the Tape mobile app

Thatโ€™s a really neat workaround!
It will pair really well with the file uploads when they are released.

Question: What happens when we create/update a record that has required fields that are not yet available? Specifically in regards to automations.

Eg. On save/update: do something with [email address field]
(I chose a field that I know isnโ€™t currently available.)

This is great news and huge update.
One question regarding this: is there a way to add multiple organisations to an app? Am I missing something or am I just too optimistic already? :grinning:

Hi @tomaz,

Thanks a lot for the kind words, we also see this as a big step forward in making Tape more accessible on mobile. Some use cases are now covered since users can edit records on mobile :tada:

However, this is still a bit of a workaround, as weโ€™re leveraging the new Forms to enable record creation and editing with the limited field types weโ€™ve rolled out so far. The full mobile integration of the new record โ€“ including an org switcher โ€“ will come with the next phase as we modernize the mobile app.

That version will also include the new fully integrated mobile record, a workspace overview, recently used records, and more. Weโ€™re planning to tackle all of that once the new record is fully released on desktop.

Best,
Leo
